Week 6 (2 - 8 Feb): The Great Commission

The Great Commission: Our Shared Calling

Last week, we explored our identity in Christ as a divine community. This week, through Ps Darren's message, we build on that foundation: as followers of Christ, every one of us is commissioned. Our calling is to be witnesses for Him and to disciple others, even as we are being discipled ourselves.

Being a Witness: Our Authentic Story

As believers, our new life rests in the Father’s unconditional love and grace. We are led by the Spirit and anchored by His Word. From this place of living relationship, Jesus calls us to reach out—to be witnesses to those who don’t yet know Him and to make new disciples. This is our mandate from the King Himself:

“And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, ‘All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.’” (Matthew 28:18-20 NKJV)

It’s common to doubt our qualifications for such a task. But Jesus deliberately chose the "unqualified" as His first disciples. He calls true worshippers, not the spiritually confident. As Ps Darren reminded us, witnessing isn't about delivering a polished testimony. It is the sincere sharing of why we gave our lives to Christ and the transformation that followed. This is not a recruitment drive, but a love response—a natural outflow of the grace we have gratefully received.

A Disciple Who Also Disciples: Our Shared Journey

When someone says "yes" to Jesus, the discipleship journey begins. The key is genuine welcome into a community of fellow disciples, all rooted in living out this new life. We walk together, encouraging and strengthening one another.

This isn’t about transferring moral instructions or theology. It is about guiding a new believer to hear from the Holy Spirit for themselves, Who alone produces true and lasting transformation. And we never do this alone: Jesus promised His constant presence in this mission. His power works through us—for healing, cleansing, deliverance, and miracles—as we obey His call.

Carrying Our Cross: The Authentic Platform

Having received new life through the Cross, we must never lose sight of it in the busyness of life. We carry the Cross daily through real struggles and joys. It is in this authentic journey—especially in the tough times—that others can genuinely see Christ in us and witness the freedom He brings.

We are not called to portray an idealised, perfect life lived by our own strength. We are simply called to carry the Cross. Our vulnerability and reliance on Him become the most powerful testimony that others can see.

Where It Starts: Spirit-Led and Ready

The Great Commission begins right where you are. Our role is not to strive in our own effort, but to wait upon God and be led by His Spirit. Who is He prompting us to witness to? Who is He inviting us to walk alongside? What simple step of obedience awaits us today?

Often, the most profound mission field is our own home. The family is the ideal place to start this commissioning journey. As we journey together, living out our faith authentically, the importance of this calling is naturally imparted to the next generation.

Let’s move forward not as a task force, but as a Spirit-led community—witnessing from our story, discipling in relationship, and carrying the Cross so others may see our Christ.

Blessings,

Jacob's Well
