Week 38 (14 - 20 Sep): Trusting God in the Storm

Paul’s journey to Rome began under Roman custody, but God was sovereignly guiding every step. Even when circumstances went from bad to worse, God’s purpose for Paul never changed.

Why does God allow storms?

Following God does not mean we will have a storm-free life. Paul was promised that he would stand before Caesar, but he was never promised an easy journey. Instead, God promised His presence, guidance and protection (Acts 27:23–24). Storms remind us not to depend on circumstances but on God’s faithfulness. When difficulties come, our instinct is often, “How do I get out of this?” Instead, we should turn to God and trust His promises.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” Proverbs 3:5–6

Trusting God’s wisdom

Paul warned them not to sail, but the centurion listened to the sailors instead. Human expertise is valuable, but it can still be wrong. We should seek God’s wisdom and discernment rather than simply following the majority.

“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” Psalm 46:1

Faith produces courage and leadership

Paul was not the captain, owner or centurion, yet he became a source of leadership through faith, wisdom, courage and service. His confidence in God gave hope to everyone on board. Likewise, our faith and calmness can encourage people around us—in our workplace, church and friendships.

Paul said:

“I believe God that it will be just as it has been spoken to me.”

Acts 27:25

God’s promise did not mean they could do nothing. They still had to obey and remain on the ship. Faith in God’s promises leads to obedient action.

Faith becomes a testimony

Before the frightened passengers, Paul gave thanks to God and ate. His faith became a witness to unbelievers. The ship was destroyed, but all 276 people survived, exactly as God had promised. Sometimes the storm itself becomes the place where God demonstrates His faithfulness.

In conclusion, Acts 27 reminds us that our faith does not guarantee a storm-free life. It enables us to remain anchored in God through the storm. When we are anchored in God through the storm, our faith becomes a testimony that encourages those around us.

"Be still, and know that I am God… The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.” Psalm 46:10–11

Father, thank You for Your steadfast love. Give us courage and strength to trust in You when we face the storms of our life. You will never leave us or forsake us, and You are our constant in every storm. Help us to be still and know that You are God in all circumstances. In Jesus' name we pray, amen.
