Week 35 (24 - 30 Aug): Unwavering Faith

Last Saturday, we continued with the story of Paul’s trial in Caesarea. As governor, Festus was unable to understand the nature of the accusations brought against Paul by the Jewish leaders. Festus took the opportunity to consult King Agrippa during his visit to Caesarea, hoping that the king would help find the cause of the charges. Acts 25:13 to Acts 26:1–32 record Paul being brought out to speak before King Agrippa, give his defence and share his testimony.

Paul has gone through a long and difficult journey of trials — from being arrested in Jerusalem to facing accusations before Governors Felix and Festus, and now standing before King Agrippa. Yet through these arduous trials, opposition and sufferings, Paul continued to keep his faith and remained unwavering in his calling to preach the gospel.

We see a contrasting character in the governors, Felix and Festus. While Paul’s heart focused on “what has God called me to do”, the governors were more concerned with “what can I do to favour the Jews”. Paul took every opportunity to be a witness of Christ, while Festus was willing to compromise Paul’s innocence for the favour of the Jews when he asked Paul to go to Jerusalem for his trial (v25:9). This compromise eventually trapped Paul in chains for even longer.

This makes us reflect on our own walk with Christ. How far do we go to compromise our convictions to gain acceptance from others or to fit into the culture around us? Are we more concerned about being faithful to God and His calling, or about pleasing people to avoid conflict or disagreement, or just to be accepted? Paul’s example challenges us to stand firm in our faith, even when it is difficult.

It is easier said than done, but we can see God’s fingerprints during Paul’s difficult journey. God’s protection was evident and divine. From the beating and the ambush to the gridlock, God delivered Paul in the midst of dire circumstances. Sandie shared that regardless of how big or intense our situation may be, God is bigger than our situation and He is able to deliver us.

Paul never ceased to share the gospel, even when standing before King Agrippa. What looked like an opportunity to defend himself became another opportunity for Paul to testify about Christ. His circumstances did not change his mission; his chains did not diminish his conviction. Paul remained faithful to the calling God had given him.

Through Paul’s long and painful trials, we are reminded that being faithful doesn’t mean the absence of problems or sufferings. But when we remain steadfast and trust that God is in control and that He is bigger than every situation we face, we will find strength to persevere, stand firm in our faith and continue to fulfil the calling He has given us. I pray that we may continually be encouraged by the story of Paul.
