Last Saturday, the Chinese group joined Jacob's Well for a time of fellowship. We started with a table full of good food with bubbly conversation and laughter. Jeffrey led the discussion by reading aloud the whole passage on Acts 6:8-7:60 which centers on the story of Stephen.
Stephen was one of the seven chosen to take on the administrative tasks from the apostles in the early church. He was a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit. However his faithfulness led him into intense opposition, false accusations, and ultimately, death.
In the midst of sufferings, Stephen remained calm - “his face was like the face of an angel” (Acts 6:15). Like Peter, he responded with boldness by speaking the truth, recounting God’s faithfulness throughout Israel’s history. What strikes us most is Stephen’s responses at the end. He continued to focus on Christ in the face of death, even more, he chose to forgive like how Jesus forgave in his final breath: “Lord, do not hold this sin against them” (Acts 7:60).
Here are some key takeaways from Stephen’s life:
1. Spiritual empowerment is for everyone, not just leaders.
Stephen was appointed to distribute food, yet he also did what the apostles did - performing great wonders and signs. The Holy Spirit is the true source of power. While we often rely on our own strength, Stephen’s example reminds us to invite the Holy Spirit to fill and empower us. Anita shared a testimony on the importance of communicating our heart’s desires to the Holy Spirit. She recounted how her grandson wanted to win gold in a race. One evening, his grandfather encouraged him to invite the Holy Spirit and share his desire. He saw a vision of gold—and went on to win the race. We, too, should engage the Holy Spirit with our desires and have faith in what He reveals to us.
2. Stephen’s vision of heaven gave him strength and peace.
His unwavering faith is inspiring. This led us to ask ourselves: when we face challenges, do we fix our eyes on our problems, or on the promises of God? Ronnie shared the story of Peter walking on water. When Peter beheld the storm, he began to sink; but when he beheld Jesus, his faith was restored.
3. Sharing the gospel may often lead one down a path of discomfort.
Stephen exemplified the heart of Christ, and his death was a turning point for the spread of gospel. We were challenged to ask ourselves: are we willing to share the gospel, even when it is uncomfortable and inconvenient?
Prayer
Dear Lord, thank you for our team that served in Surabaya. Thank you for their servant hearts. We pray for their works and words - that you would bless their efforts, and more lives will be touched by your goodness. May the story of Stephen continue to encourage and inspire us, that more will be equipped with boldness to share the gospel. Thank you Lord for gift of your grace. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
